Ruby Vs Java

One of my class mates stated, “Although Ruby gained a lot of interest from developers, it is still not popular as Java, in particular, due to the fear that Ruby is open source.”

I agree with her statement above that although Ruby has many benefits like fewer lines of code required, no compilation required, etc. but Java is open source so suitable support takes time.  Java has an advantage as it is well-known and code execution is much faster compared to Ruby. Also, Java has better application performance.

While doing my research, I came across JRuby. That means Java and Ruby can be used together. Do you think it is a useful combination? I concluded that it didn’t get any popular. Your thoughts on it why it couldn’t it get a major share in the market?
